A Potluck Dish with a Bite!

apple bitesIf you’re like me, every time you receive a notice from your child’s school about a holiday potluck you agonzie over what to bring.  Should you bring something sweet – a sure winner with the kids?  Or, maybe something healthy, something you’ll feel good about, but will likely end up left on the potluck table at the end of the night, never having been touched?  Well, I recently came across a host of clever Halloween snack ideas from Family Fun Magazine that will make ghouls everywhere howl with pleasure.  My personal favorite, the Apple Bites, toothy mouth shapes made with apples and slivered almonds.  For details on how to make these and other fun Halloween treats, click here.

Looking to cast a spell on guests attending your Halloween bash? Forget the candy and treat your party-goers to these magical libations!

2 oz Rum

2 oz Kahlua

1 oz  heavy cream

Combine rum and Kahlua in martini shaker with ice.  Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.  Shake 1 oz of heavy cream over ice until frothy.  Pour into martini glass to form a frothy layer over the rum and Kahlua mixture.  Garnish with a lemon twist or pixie stick filled “magic dust.”

2 oz Simple Syrup (Stirrings is my brand of choice)

2 strawberries

1 quarter lemon

2 oz Tequila

4 oz Lemon-Lime Seltzer

For each cocktail, muddle two strawberries in the simple syrup.  Quarter a lemon and squeeze the juice into the muddled strawberries.  Stir and fill the glass with ice.  Add tequila and top with seltzer.  Garnish with an eyeball print lollipop (available at Oriental Trading Company).
